INTEGRATED CURRICULUM
During the Spring 2022 semester, I designed and implemented a 10-Day Integrated Curriculum Unit. This unit allows students to form connections between mathematics, geography, literacy, and social-emotional frameworks.
Unit: A Deep Dive Into Rational Numbers
SPRING 2022
Standards:
- AR 6. NS.C.5: Understand that positive and negative numbers are used together to describe quantities having opposite directions or values, explaining the meaning of 0 (e.g., temperature above/below zero, elevation above/below sea level, credits/debits, positive/negative electric charge)
- AR 6. NS.C.7: Understand ordering and absolute value of rational numbers
- AR 6. NS.C.8: Solve real-world and mathematical problems by graphing points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane
Big Ideas:
- I can describe positive and negative numbers by discussing quantities having opposite directions/values.
- I can recognize opposite signs of numbers indicate locations on opposite sides of zero.
- I can find and position integers and other rational numbers on a horizontal & vertical number line.
Results:
Through "A Deep Dive Into Rational Numbers," students demonstrated growth in their mathematical performance of the standards listed above. Students demonstrated a deeper understanding of social emotional skills and the value we place on friendships, characteristics, and citizenship.
